Police The Riverwoods Police Department was created in October 2001. It is staffed by 7 full-time and 4 part-time State of Illinois certified police officers. In addition to sworn police personnel, the Department employs two part-time Records Administrators. The Department is committed to providing the highest level of service to the Residents. The Department is a member of the Northern Illinois Police Crime Laboratory, Northern Illinois Police Alarm System and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. It has intergovernmental agreements with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The Riverwoods Police Department provides a wide range of law enforcement services, including, but not limited to: 24-hour preventative patrols, emergency response, traffic and parking enforcement, criminal and juvenile investigations, illegal drug and alcohol enforcement, and limited animal control assistance. The Police Department provides assistance to persons locked out of their houses or vehicles. The house watch program provides that Residents that are leaving town may call the Police Department, and register their absence. The Department will request some limited information and will provide extra patrol and physically check the residence while it is vacant. Medicare Scam Calls It looks like the Medicare card scam has hit Evanston. An Evanston resident just reported that she received a call from someone who says the following: "I have to send you a new Medicare Card." (The caller is male and has a pronounced accent, although other scammers may not fit that description.) When she began to ask questions of the caller and requested a return telephone number, the caller threatened to cut off her Social Security. She told him he was a phony and hung up. Then she called to the Evanston Police. The Evanston resident was smart, handled the situation very well and also wanted to warn her fellow citizens. Others may not be so fortunate and might be frightened into giving out personal information, so I ask your help in alerting clients, neighbors, family and friends. If you hear that someone has been scammed by one of these calls, please file a police report. In order to protect you, it's critical that we document these incidents. Also, there is another scam regarding the stimulus payments from the government and asking people to provide information and they will help fill out the required tax forms. Announces Retirement I announced the following at the recent Village Board Meeting: It is with mixed emotions that I announce my upcoming retirement. I recall that when I was interviewed for this position, it was asked if I would stay for five years. It has been more than six years of the most rewarding employment of my life. I have previously discussed my intentions with the Mayor and Mr. Huvard. I will gladly stay to assist in selecting and then briefly assisting my successor. I would like to thank the Mayor, Board, Village employees and consultants for making these years great. Most of all I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to the tremendous residents of this great community. Riverwoods Searches for
A New Police Chief Morris Weinstein, our current and only police chief has announced that he is ready to retire. "Morry" has been Police Chief of since September 20, 2001 and is responsible for organizing the Riverwoods Police Department, which officially came into being October 31, 2001. Chief Weinstein is an amazing man. His charismatic personality has endeared him to the Village residents, his Department and the Village Board. When the Village started the police department in 2001, we had a consultant who helped us go through an extensive search for a police chief. There were a number of qualified candidates who applied for the job, but most were unhappy when they were told the "Chief" would have to be a "Working Chief." Chief Weinstein was our unanimous choice. He did not disappoint us. He has been everything we had hoped for and more. He is an excellent manager, leader, and administrator. He was responsible for obtaining over $800,000 in grants for the Village that we never would have gotten without his expertise. Chief Weinstein is not only a large man in stature, but he is a man large in ability. His large shoes will be hard to fill. Chief Weinstein has graciously agreed to stay on and help us in our search for a new "Working Chief." When the time comes that his replacement is finally selected, and he leaves us for a life of leisure, he will be sorely missed.
